Yaal New Year Festival Displays Communal Harmony and Cultural Values

Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival 2014 organized by the Security Force Jaffna, District Secretariat Jaffna and Sri Lanka Police symbolizing communal harmony and giving priority to cultural values was held in high profile on Saturday (05) at Durayappah Stadium.

Happy crowds from various places of Jaffna enjoyed taking part in a range of traditional sports and games organized during the festival. Security Force Jaffna and the District Secretariat with sponsorship of several government and private commercial institutes distributed valuable prizes to the winners. Invitees enjoyed the taste of Kiribath (milk rice) and New Year sweets inside a makeshift traditional village house at the festival site. Army and the GA’s office treated everyone who arrived in the venue with Kiribath, sweets, tea and lunch.

Commander Security Force-Jaffna Major General Udaya Perera was the Chief Guest of the festival. Clergy of all religions, Government Agent Jaffna Mr. S. Arumainayagam, Secretary Northern Provincial Council Mr. G. Krishnamoorthy, Secretary to the Northern Governor Mr. I. Ilangovan, SSP Jaffna Mr. W. Wimalasena and Mrs. Thelma Perera were among the invitees.

An exhilarating mega musical extravaganza which drew thousands to the Durayappah Stadium marked the end of the day. A glamorous firework display also enthralled the crowd.

Governor Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Chief Minister of Central Province Mr. Sarath Ekanayake and Senior DIG Northern Province Mr. Poojith Jayasundara also attended the evening musical show as special guests.
