Chief Minister of Northern Province Justice C.V.Wigneswaran made an inspection visit to delft on 26 January 2015 and was accorded a rousing welcome.
Parliamentarian S.Sritharan, Ponnuthurai Ayngaranesan – Provincial Minister of Agriculture & Agrarian Services, T.Kurukularaja – Provincial Minister of Education, Provincial Council Members, Secretary to the Chief Minister S. Thiruvakaran and other officials were also accompanied with him during this visit.
Chief Minister had discussions with the people of that area regarding their needs and problems faced by them and also had discussion with staff of Divisional Secretariat regarding the development works. During this visit, Chief Minister provided dry rations to 250 families and also distributed bicycles and sewing machines to the needy people. Also Rs.400,000 was given by the Chief Minister for general works of the region.
Also, he visited to ruined historical places and had discussion with the relevant officials regarding tourism development of Delft region.
A group of students who got through Grade 5 scholarship 2014 examination from Vadamaratchi Education Zone received school items and uniform as a donation with coordination of 553 Brigade on February 6th at J / Uduthurai Hindu Primary school, Thalayady.
The donation, sponsored by Mr. Ivor Vancuylenberg, Vice President Kinder Haifer, Fulda, Germany and arranged by 10th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (10 VIR) were distributed among 190 students. Value of items distributed is of about Rs. 150,000/=.
Commander 553 Brigade Colonel Vijith Subhasinghe, Commanding Officer 10 VIR Lieutenant Colonel Upul Satharasinghe and principal of the J / Uduthurai Hindu Primary school Mr. S. Iyanthiram were also present.
Kanagasabapathy J Sripavan was on 30 January 2015 sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. His appointment was approved by Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena.
Justice Sripavan succeeded Shirani Bandaranayake who resigned on 29 January 2015. She resigned one day after she was reinstated as Chief Justice by the Sri Lankan President on 28 January 2015.
Bandaranaike, the first woman Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, was purportedly impeached and removed by the Sri Lankan Parliament in 2013.
Sripavan is the second Tamil to be the Chief Justice of the Sri Lankan Supreme Court. The first Tamil to hold this highest judicial post in Sri Lanka was Suppiah Sharvananda, who served between 1984 and 1988.
“A food serving center is an essential service at a public place. Jaffna Old Park has been a cynosure to many in the District, a canteen facility is a timely need of the hour. This will also improve the basic facilities of the premises. Further it will attract more visitors to the premises. Jaffna Old Park has become a common leisure time entertaining place for many including children and adults.It is ideal that the canteen was opened on a special day – Thai Pongal day.”
A canteen was opened in Jaffna Old Park for public use. A ceremony in this regards was held on 15thJanuary 2014.
This canteen was constructed under the guidance of the Governor of the Northern Province GA Chandrasiri for the use of children and public who visit Children Park and Adventure Park.
Secretary to the Governor L.Ilaangovan, Asst. Secretary to the Governor JX Selvanayagam, Asst. Secretary of Jaffna Regional Commissioner Office S.Annadurai and Commissioner of Jaffna Municipal Council S.Pranavanthan participated at this event.
Aiming at minimizing the spread of Dengue alarmingly rising in Jaffna soon after the rain ceased, 511 Brigade at Atchuvely organized an awareness programme in Kopay to educate civilians on precautionary measures.
With the support of regional health authorities, soldiers together with public health officials educated people to keep the environment clean to remove mosquito breeding place.
Two doctors, twenty Public Health Inspectors and Public Health Midwives, five Police officers joined hundred soldiers in this programme.
Over 450 civilians residing in 55 Division area underwent medical checkup and received medicine at two medical clinics organized by the 55 Division with coordination of 4th Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (4 SLAMC) on 12th and 13th December at Uduththurai and Kaddaikadu. Dr. Jayan Stephan, Dr. J. Gunaseelan and Dr. Giritharan and a medical team of “Navajeevana Health Centre”, Colombo extended their assistance to doctors and medical staff of 4 SLAMC to conduct the clinics.
The programme was organized for the civilians who do not have easy access to medical facilities since there is no hospital or medical centre in the vicinity. Out of 462 civilians, 29 attended the dental clinic. Those who were in need of treatment were given medicine while a few others were referred to hospital.
An educative programme to improve personality, leadership and moral qualities of younger generation in Jaffna, Security Force Jaffna (SF-J) organized a two day workshop for 120 school prefects on December 09th and 10th at Thalsevana Holiday Resort, Kankesanthurai.
In the first phase conducted on the 09th, 75 school prefects, both male and female, from Alaveddy Arunothya College, Vasavilan Central College and Kuttiyapulam Government Tamil mixed school attended the workshop.
The second day programme on 10th were attended by 45 prefects from, Thelippalai Union College, Thelippalai Mahajana College, Mallakam Central College and Alaveddy Arunachalam Vidyalaya.
Lectures on social etiquettes and manners, leadership and public relations were conducted by religious leaders and senior Army officers.
Principals and teachers of those schools were also present.
In recognition of civic-oriented welfare projects being carried out by the Army in Jaffna, “We Are One Sri Lanka”, an organization based in UK showed its solidarity by donating 18 computers to Security Force Jaffna (SF-J) on Sunday (09) morning. Mr. Mohan Samarasinghe representing the organization handed over the computers, each to the value of Rs. 80,000/=, to Major General Priyatha Jayasundara, General Officer Commanding 52 Division at the “Harmony Centre” at Thalayalai, Kokuvil East.
Computers will be used to give training to Jaffna children on Information Technology at the Harmony Centre established on concept of Commander SF-J Major General Udaya Perera with purpose of helping people of Jaffna on requirements in spheres of education, health, fisheries, women empowerment and so on.
The donation was coordinated by Commanding Officer 6th Sri Lanka Signal Corps Lieutenant Colonel Chandana Arangalla.
“We Are One Sri Lanka” is conducting many community projects in many areas in the North.
A two-day workshop on Second National Language has been organized at Kopay Teachers’ Training College on 08th and 09th November. Governor of Northern Province GA Chandrasiri participated as Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony of the workshop.
Students of Trilingual Learning Center of Northern Province participated at this workshop.
