Kinder Helper Sri Lanka, a Non Governmental Organization based in Kekirawa, Anuradhapura, on request of the Army donated school items and uniforms worth of Rs. 200,000/= to students of 553 Brigade area.
With coordination of Commanding Officer 19th Sri Lanka National Guard (19 SLNG), 39 students of Veththilaikerny Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed school and 25 students of Veththilaikerny Parameswaran Maha Vidyalaya were handed over the donation by the organization at a ceremony held recently at Veththilaikerny Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed school.
Parents who were present on the occasion were also given packs of dry ration during the function.
President Kinder Helper Sri Lanka Mr. I.O. Venkulan, General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier A. Kariyakarawana, Commander 553 Brigade Colonel S.P.V.S. Subhasinghe, principal of Veththilaikerny Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed school Mr. P. Thiruganathan and students, teachers and parents participated in the event.
Army serving in Jaffna, continuing to shift its camps to government lands, handed over 50 houses and 22 plots of lands hitherto occupied by the troops to their legitimate owners Saturday (09) morning.
Headquarters 521 Brigade of Point Pedro (PPD) released 29 houses and 03 lands while Headquarters 7th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (7 VIR) of Valvettithurai handed back 19 houses and 18 blocks of lands. Meanwhile, 2 more houses and 01 block of land used as a Company Headquarters at Sakkottai by the 7 VIR were also given to their owners during a brief function held at PPD Saturday morning.
Commander 521 Brigade Colonel Tikiri Dissanayake delivered the documents with regard to release of civilians’ property to Divisional Secretary PPD Mr. R.T. Jeyaseelan.
Assistant Divisional Secretary PPD Ms. Usha, Mayor PPD Mr. Ravindran, senior officers of Army and Police serving in the area, owners of released lands and houses and distinguished guests attended the occasion.
PPD jetty road so far remained within the former 521 Brigade Headquarters premises was also opened for public use during the ceremony.
Inter-sports club football tournament organized by the 55 Division of Veththilaikerny came to an end on Thursday (12) making Nagarkovil Ilantharans the champions. The tournament commenced on 1st of September with participation of 11 Sports Clubs in the area.
Ilantharan players defeated St. Marys of Kaddaikadu recording a 05-03 victory after a hard battle. The tournament was organized for the second time by the 55 Division and Commander 552 Brigade Colonel Deepal Wanniarachchi attended the inauguration.
Award ceremony was held on Thursday (12) with participation of General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe, the Chief Guest. Catholic priests, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Chula Abeynayake, Brigade Commanders and senior officers of Army and Police witnessed the award ceremony.
Ten houses and twenty nine acres of lands used by the Army in Jaffna were released to owners at a ceremony held in Eluththumadduval on Monday (26) with redeployment of six Army camps at Varani, Manthuvil, Iyaththalai, Ketpeli and Eluththumadduval including 522 Brigade Headquarters at Mirusuvil, Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) handed over those lands and houses to respective Civil Administrative officials.
Chief Priest of Ushan Hindu Temple, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Mr. Douglas Devananda, Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Divisional Secretary Chavakachcheri Ms S. Shanthaseelan and General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe were present on the occasion.
More than 200 officers and other ranks as well as members of the civil staff serving the 55 Division Headquarters atVettalaikerny, Jaffna, in response to a request gave away their blood for the use of Tamil civilians under treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital during a mobile project on account of Poson Full Moon Day (23).
The Army was compelled to organize this campaign after medical officers at Jaffna Teaching Hospital turned to the Army for blood since an acute shortage exists in the Jaffna Blood Bank. The matter was brought to the notice of the 55 Division Headquarters by medical authorities.
