US Coaches Here to Train Jaffna Football Players

Making a history in the field of football in Jaffna, a team of experienced coaches and players from the USA arrived in Jaffna to conduct coaching camps for youths and schoolchildren this week.

With coordination of Security Force Jaffna (SF – J), Mr. Gregg Davis, Mr. Evan Davis, Charles Johnson and Rodney Petersheim with their team leader Mr. Mathew Billman of Soccer Outreach Association, Pennsylvania conducted a three day coaching camp at Durayappah Stadium on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of July. Commander Security Force Jaffna Major General Udaya Pererra attended the inauguration ceremony on Monday (21).

About 375 youths from different leagues in Jaffna, Valikamam and Islands administrative divisions and schoolchildren took part in the programme. One motive of organizing this sports camp is to inculcate qualities such as patience, equality, courage and acceptance of victory and defeat alike. It helps eradicate war mentality and assist the process of reconciliation.

A similar programme which gives training to players in Thenmaratchci and Vadamaratchi administrative divisions will be held at St. Michael’s grounds in Nelliady from 25th to 27th instant.

President Sri Lanka Football Federation Mr. Ranjith Rodrigo assisted the Army to organize the coaching camp. Commander 553 Brigade Colonel Vijith Subasinghe coordinated it on behalf of the Security Force Jaffna.

55 Division Organizes a Coaching Camp for Football Players

Headquarters 55 Division of Veththilaikerny, in another Civil Military Coordination (CIMIC) affair, organized a coaching camp for football players competing in the tournament organized by the 55 Division for the second year.

With coordination of the Civil Affairs Officer of the Division Headquarters and the Commanding Officer of the 19th Sri Lanka National Guard, Mr. S.K.P. Silva, coordinating officer of Sri Lanka Football Federation and coach national beach football team, Mr. Lakmal Sampath and Mr. Rohitha Kumara, school football coaches gave a two day training to 150 players including youths, soldiers and school players on 05th and 06th September at Uduththurai Senthamil ground.

Nagarkovil Ilantharans Wins 55 Division Football Cup

2013_09_16_10Inter-sports club football tournament organized by the 55 Division of Veththilaikerny came to an end on Thursday (12) making Nagarkovil Ilantharans the champions. The tournament commenced on 1st of September with participation of 11 Sports Clubs in the area.

Ilantharan players defeated St. Marys of Kaddaikadu recording a 05-03 victory after a hard battle. The tournament was organized for the second time by the 55 Division and Commander 552 Brigade Colonel Deepal Wanniarachchi attended the inauguration.

Award ceremony was held on Thursday (12) with participation of General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe, the Chief Guest. Catholic priests, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Chula Abeynayake, Brigade Commanders and senior officers of Army and Police witnessed the award ceremony.
