A group of Jaffna students got opportunity to take part in World Children’s Day celebration organized on October 1st by the government at Ranminithenna, in the down south when the 7thth Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (7 SLAWC) at Kankasanthurai (KKS) arranged a trip for them in collaboration with Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC). The memorable journey included travel by air and visits to the Parliament and SLRC to give Northern students firsthand experience in functioning of those places.
Fifteen boys and five girls from Vasavilan Central College, Point Pedro Hartley College, Ilavalai St. Henry College, Kokkuvil Hindu College, Nelliady Central College, Jaffna Hindu College and Jaffna Central College and five teachers were initially taken to Colombo by road on 29thth by the Commanding Officer 7 SLAWC Major Chandrika Rajaguru who stayed with children and teachers throughout the journey. She was assisted by Second Lieutenant N. Narenthra of 20thth National Cadet Corps Headquarters Jaffna. On 30thth they visited the Parliament, SLRC and other places.
Northern Provincial Industrial Exhibition has been organized by Department of Industries commenced on 31 July 2014 at Jaffna Central College. The exhibition was organized for the purpose of promoting local products as well as increasing marketing opportunities.
Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council Justice C.V.Wigneswaran graced the exhibition as Chief Guest and inaugurated the exhibition. Chief Secretary, Northern Province, Mrs.R.Wijialudchumi also graced the occasion as special guest.
This exhibition will be held on 31st July and 01st of August 2014.
Exhibits and displays are categorized into 03 main categories; such as processing and sales stalls, Handloom and Handicraft Exhibition and competition stalls and business centre. Coir based products, pottery based products, food processing, carpentry based products, Handloom products, sea shell products and Palmyrah based products are important exhibits. Chief Minister addressed the gatherings and visited every stall and had a casual chat with the gatherings.
The Selected exhibits (Handicraft & Textile) in Provincial level will be send to National level exhibition & competition conducted by the National agencies of National Craft Council & Textile Department Colombo.
Provincial Council members, Secretaries, Deputy Chief Secretaries, Heads of Departments, Provincial council staffs and public visited this exhibition.
A Sharamadana was organized by the 513 Brigade on 12th June to reconstruct the road running from Mavankallady to Thelippalai and clean either side. This community welfare project was organized to mark the Poson Full Moon day. Nearly 85 soldiers representing 2nd Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 11th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 14th Gemunu Watch participated in the Shramadana. This 5 km road is used by hundreds of civilians in Kolankallady Grama Niladhari Division on daily routine. Showing solidarity to this worthy act by the Army, about 35 villagers contributed their labour to make the Shramadana a success. The Brigade offered meals to all who took part in the programme.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) attached to the Headquarters 51 Division held a workshop on road safety for students of Jaffna Central College at its auditorium recently. Officers of Jaffna Police delivered lectures during the workshop attended by 310 students and 7 teachers.
